LARRY GELBART (Book)

For his work over the past 60 years, Larry Gelbart has received, among others, two Tony Awards (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, City of Angels), the New York Drama Critics Circle, Drama Desk and Olivier Award, a special Outer Critics Circle Award for his contribution to comedy, the Los Angeles and New York Society of Film Critics and two Edgar Allen Poe Awards, a pair of Oscar nominations (Oh,God!, Tootsie), a trio of Emmys (one for developing the M*A*S*H series for television), a CableAce, Golden Globe, PEN, Peabody, Humanitas, Christopher and two Edgar Allen Poe awards, two Honorary Doctorates, and nine Writers Guild awards (including the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award and a Lifetime of Career Excellence Tribute). His book, Laughing Matters was published by Random House in 1998. His three HBO films, Barbarians at the Gate, Weapons of Mass Distraction, And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself, were magnets for many other honors. In 1998, he received the first Tribute to a Writer at the U.S. Festival of Comedy Arts; in 2001, he recieved the Anti-Defamation League's William S. Paley Award for Excellence in Television. His most recent play, Floodgate, bowed at the Geffen Playhouse and to complete what he calls an unintended trilogy, he is currently writing a new play for the BBC, entitled Abrogate.

CY COLEMAN (Music)

“Cy Coleman is a permanent gem in Broadway’s musical crown,” wrote The New York Post. His Broadway shows garnered Tony Awards, Drama Desk Awards, Critics Awards and many others. Included are such favorites as Sweet Charity, City of Angels, The Will Rogers Follies, Barnum, The Life and Little Me. Cy received three Emmys, two Grammys and countless Grammy nominations. Some hit songs include “Big Spender,” “If My Friends Could See Me Now,” “Hey Look Me Over,” “Witchcraft” and “The Best Is Yet to Come.” Mr. Coleman’s awards and honors include the Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Dramatists Guild’s Frederick Loewe Award and ASCAP Foundation’s Richard Rodgers Award. He died suddenly one month before rehearsals began for the recent Broadway revival of Sweet Charity.

DAVID ZIPPEL (Lyrics)

David Zippel's lyrics have won him the Tony Award, two Academy Award Nominations, two Grammy nominations and three Golden Globe nominations.  He is one of the few contemporary lyricists to have achieved success on Broadway, in Hollywood and in the world of Pop music.  His songs appear on over 25 million CDs around the world. He made his Broadway debut with City of Angels, for which he received the Tony Award, New York Drama Critics Award and Drama Desk Award, London's Olivier Award and Evening Standard Award.  Other Credits-Broadway: The Goodbye Girl, (Best Musical,Tony Nomination) Barbara Cook: a Concert for The Theater, The Woman In White, resulted in a #2 single on British pop charts and was nominated for 5 Olivier Awards including Best Musical. Films: Disney's Hercules (number #1 single “Go The Distance”, Oscar Nomination), Disney's Mulan (“Reflection”, Oscar Nomination) The Swan Princess, Frankie and Johnny, The Wedding Planner. Off Broadway: Just So, It's Better With A Band, Diamonds, A… My Name is Alice. Many great singers have recorded David's songs including Stevie Wonder, Chistina Aguilera, Mel Torme, Ricky Martin, 98 Degrees, Cleo Laine, Linda Eder, Nancy LaMott, Sarah Brightman, and Barbara Cook.  The Lincoln Center American Songbook is presenting an evening of David's songs February 24th. A graduate of HarvardLawSchool, he is delighted not to practice law.

JOE LEONARDO (Director)

has directed national tours of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Me and My Girl, Ziegfeld: A Night At The Follies, City of Angels, Bully and Kiss Me Kate and co-created and directed the national tour of the theater/circus spectacular Cirque Ingenieux (also televised on PBS Television.)  Mr. Leonardo has directed It’s Better With A Band (created with lyricist David Zippel) in New York, London and Philadelphia. He has also directed more than twenty productions in Chicago, including the Joseph Jefferson Award Nominees for Best Musical: Me and My Girl, Grand Hotel, Sweeney Todd (Joseph Jefferson Award Winner), Miss Saigon (co-directed with Dyanne Early) and Sunset Boulevard, as well as recent productions of Side Show, Brigadoon and At Wit’s End.  His initial production of the new musical At Wit’s End, which premiered at Florida Stage in Palm Beach, received 11 Carbonell Award nominations.  As Artistic Director of NETworks, he oversaw the acclaimed national tours of Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Sound of Music (America and Asia), State Fair, Damn Yankees, Victor/Victoria, Big, Show Boat, Annie, Jekyll and Hyde, Bully, The Civil War, Cirque Ingenieux, Cinderella and Ragtime.  Mr.  Leonardo has also directed numerous modern and classic plays including The Balcony, The Winter’s Tale, Much Ado About Nothing, The Misanthrope, The Miser, The Country Wife, Red Noses and Arcadia as well as other plays by Pinter, Shakespeare, Moliere. Chekhov, Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides.  His recent concert version of City of Angels at the McCallum Theater in Palm Desert led to this REPRISE! production of one of his favorite pieces of theater.

GERALD STERNBACH (Music Director)

was Peter Matz’s associate for fourteen shows. Now in his third season as musical director, he has received four Theater LA Ovation and two LA Drama Critics nominations; recent LA Philharmonic debut at the Hollywood Bowl as on-stage pianist for “Stephen Sondheim’s 75th Birthday-The Concert”, also assisting Paul Gemignani; assisted John Mauceri rehearsing the summer Bowl musicals The Music Man, My Fair Lady, Mame and Camelot; associate conductor for Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Merlin and The Tap Dance Kid (all Broadway), Les Miserables (L.A. premiere company), conducted the national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Song and Dance (starring Melissa Manchester). Other credits: accompanying Marilyn Horne and Florence Henderson in benefit recitals for P.A.C.E. and the Music Academy of the West (the latter also joined by Carol Burnett); musical direction for Two On The Aisle, the music of Harry Warren and Marvin Hamlisch (for STAGE-2005), The Perfect Year (for STAGE-2004), honoring the music of Sir Andrew, and Something Wonderful (for the Actor's Fund-2002), honoring the music of Richard Rodgers, each directed by David Galligan); the club acts for Jason Graae, Donna McKechnie, As a songwriter/composer-- ASCAP Rising Songwriter Showcases on both coasts, Cabaret Conventions at New York’s Town Hall, the Hollywood Roosevelt’s Cinegrill; music and songs (in collaboration with Lindy Robbins) performed in the ‘93-’98 editions of the Ringling Brothers’ Circus . the musicals Heartbeats (in collaboration with Amanda McBroom) The Gay 90’s – Looking Back and Moving On and Vampire Virgins from Venus.  This last spring, Gerald’s song “Mary” (written in collaboration with Faye Greenberg)--a paean to The Mary Tyler Moore Show was performed on the TV Land Awards show by Eric McCormack-- in the presence of the original cast of the landmark sitcom.

BRADLEY KAYE (Scenic Design)

 

Past productions include REPRISE!’s On The Town, Pippin, CompanyOn the Twentieth Century, Anything Goes, Three Penny Opera and Bells Are Ringing.  He has been working in and around the LA theatre scene for the past decade, at theatres ranging from Interact and ICT, to Tiffany and the Coronet.  In addition, he has had shows open (and close) Off-Broadway, on the road and out on the open seas. Recent ones include Forbidden Broadway (95-05) in NYC, productions for Norwegian Caribbean and Disney Cruise Lines (The Golden Mickeys), plus 2 shows for Hollywood Bowl (Mame, Mass).  This past summer, he opened the Block Party Bash, a daytime Parade/ Street Show for Disney’s California Adventure, along with The Golden Mickeys for the new Hong Kong Disneyland, with his work now being seen in California, Japan and Hong Kong.  Acknowledgements include the LADCC’s Lifetime Achievement in Design, along with recognitions over the years from Backstage West and others.  A special thanks to Ted for making living simple the way worth living.

ALEX JAEGER (Costume Designer)

has designed costumes for theater, film, and opera across the country. Recently, he designed The Tempest for the Perseverance Theatre in Alaska. Other credits include.the world premeires of  The Paris Letter  for the Kirk Douglas Theatre and Light for the Theatre @ Boston Court; Romeo and Juliet, Handler, Stop Kiss and Fuddy Meers for Oregon Shakespeare Festival; Servant of Two Masters and Man of La Mancha for Utah Shakespearean Festival; Two Sisters and a Piano for the Public Theater in N.Y.; It Ain't Nothin' but the Blues for the Geffen Playhouse; Skylight, Play Strindberg, True West, Nostalgia and All My Sons,Pinocchio for South Coast Repertory; Tally's Folly for the Arizona Theatre Co.; Doubt for Pasadena Playhouse; The Tempest for Seattle Children's Theatre; A Class Act, The Cripple of Inishmaan, The Russian National Postal Service, Black Milk,The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, andCaroline or Change for the Studio Theatre in Washington D.C.;   Alex also designed South Pacific starring Susan Egan.  He has received an Ovation Award, a L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award, three Drama-Logue Awards and four Garland Awards for his work in Los Angeles.

TOM RUZIKA (Lighting Design)

has created designs for twenty-four REPRISE! productions including Applause, Sweeney Todd, Mack & Mabel and Hair.  He designed the acclaimed production of Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks at the Belasco Theatre on Broadway, the Geffen Playhouse and the Coconut Grove Playhouse.   He has designed over eighty-five productions for South Coast Repertory Theatre and shows for the Mark Taper Forum, Laguna Playhouse, International City Theatre, Opera Santa Barbara, South Bay CLO, Fullerton CLO, Sacramento Music Theatre, Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C., and the current national tour of Peter Pan featuring Cathy Rigby.   His lighting can be seen at theme parks in six different countries including Universal Studios Hollywood, Japan and Orlando; Warner Bros. Movie World Australia, Germany and Spain; Knott's Berry Farm and Disneyland.  His architectural lighting can be seen at Hard Rock Hotels and Casinos, Santa Monica Place, South Coast Plaza Mall, Orange County Performing Arts Center, the Los Angeles Music Center and many other retail centers, restaurants, churches, residences and libraries. 

PHILIP G. ALLEN (Sound Design)

has designed over 85 theatrical shows, including Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks on Broadway, the most recent national tour of Jesus Christ Superstar, The Ten Commandments starring Val Kilmer at the Kodak Theatre, Measure for Measure, Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Cinderella at the Ahmanson, The Talking Cure, Like Jazz, Big River, Flower Drum Song and First Picture Show at the Taper, and all of the past eight seasons of REPRISE!  Other design work includes Paint Your Wagon, Six Dance Lessons In Six Weeks and A'int Nothin' But the Blues at the Geffen, Play On, Only A Kingdom and Blame it on the Movies at the Pasadena Playhouse, Masada at the Shubert Theatre in LA, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Singing in the Rain for Denver's Arvada Center for the Arts, Forever Plaid and Blues in the Night at the Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami, The King and I, South Pacific and Into the Woods for the Long Beach Civic Light Opera.  On Broadway he assisted long time design partner Jon Gottlieb on 2001’s If You Ever Leave Me I'm Coming With You.  He served as Production Sound Engineer for Thoroughly Modern Millie at La Jolla Playhouse and was the head soundman for the national tour of Titanic.  He won the 2003 NAACP award for Sound Design for Jesus Christ Superstar, the 2001 Ovation Award for Flower Drum Song, and the 1999 LA Drama Critics Circle Award for Cinderella, as well as five LA Dramalogue Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design, and two Ovation Award nominations for Best Sound Design.
